FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

These are some of the general questions people often ask about The Work.

I've heard of The Work of Gurdjieff, and I know the Landmark Forum uses the word "story." And a lot of Eastern teachers speak of things similar to what Katie speaks of.   Did she study other philosophies or systems?

No. Katie had no "spiritual" ambition or exposure prior to 1986. After 1986, she developed The Work completely out of her own experiences. Any similarities to other systems are unintentional.

Does The Work work for depression or anxiety?

Before a feeling comes, there is always a thought: "I'm worthless." "I'm wasting my life." "Something terrible could happen." Our depression comes from believing these thoughts.

If you knew deeply inside yourself that these thoughts weren't true, would you still feel depressed?

The four questions help you see what's really true for you. Many people around the world find that The Work is the fast way out of suffering. It can complement any other approach you choose.

Is The Work on some sort of mission?

The Work is simply four questions and a turnaround. There is no mission or motive. The questions don't even say, "Answer me." If you feel that these questions could serve you, you're invited to use them and experience the result.

Is Katie enlightened?

Katie answers, "I don't know anything about that. I'm just someone who knows the difference between what hurts and what doesn't."

I know someone who is really judgmental and needs to do The Work. How do I get him to do it?

People new to this process often feel that almost everyone they know is stuck in judgment and blame. Good. If you think they need to change, put it on paper and realize that perhaps it is you that you want to change in the moment. If you think someone else needs The Work, you may be the one who needs The Work. Find your own freedom first. And once you do, the world will follow. Until then, you could find a simple, honest way of sharing your experience. Refer them to this web site or give them our free Little Book - An Excerpt from Loving What Is, or offer them the four questions and turnaround. If they're not interested, turn it around, give The Work to yourself. We don't have to wait for the world to be free before we are free.

How many sessions would I need to obtain peace of mind?

It varies from person to person.  Typically a person feels immediate relief after the first session but in my experience that experience is heightened the deeper you dive into the work.  If freedom is your goal, why not take the leap!

Who needs the work?

No one needs the work; the work is simply a tool to inquire upon our stressful thoughts that can sometimes imprison us.  When I was introduced to the work, I had enough of life and desperately needed a change.  Going back to living the way I had for 40 years was not an option to me.  The Work provided me the opportunity to look at my life in a different way.  To be able to look forward to an amazing future that had been hidden form me in the past and to discover the beauty of the present moment as it is, however it is.  This journey reminds me of a quote by Anais Nin- “The risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom”
